MEC DEC CELEBRATION Saturday, May 17, 2008 4:00pm-9:00pm Event Schedule:
4:00 to 7:00pm: Tents on the hillside will give guests the opportunity to experience Mec Dec Celebrations throughout time, as interpreted by various regional sites and organizations. This includes: Buckley Laboratory of Unusual Research Projects, Charlotte Museum of History, Charlotte Folk Society, Grand Lodge of North Carolina Freemasons, Historic Charlotte, Historic Latta Plantation, Historic Rosedale Plantation, Levine Museum of the New South, Lincoln County Historical Association, May 20th Society, Mecklenburg Historical Association, President James K. Polk State Historic Site, Reed Gold Mine, and Rural Hill.
The Hezekiah Alexander Rock House will be opened to the public at this time. The kitchen will be open with Kitty Evans interpreting the impact of the Mecklenburg Declaration on the enslaved. Local militia interpreters from the NC 6th will be on hand to discuss military engagements in Charlotte and to demonstrate musket firing and drill music. Jr. Docents and staff will lead historic games for children, as well as present a puppet show.
5:30 to 8:00pm: Dinner will begin being served. Guests who choose to purchase dinner may do so until 8:00pm, which will be served in the Barn. A tent with tables and chairs will be available on the grounds to enjoy the catered meal. Music will be played while guests gather their dinners and sit down to eat. 6:30 to 6:45pm: There will be a reading of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence by a guest speaker. 6:45 to 7:15pm: An additional guest speaker will provide a brief history of Mec Dec by introducing the various sites, and the famous historic visitors that attended past Mec Dec celebrations. 7:15 to 9:00pm: Live music will play with the opportunity to dance by candlelight on the grounds to colonial music. Jr. Docents and staff will continue to lead historic games for children, as well as present another puppet show.
