The Railroad and Charlotte's Cotton IndustryThe coming of the railroad ushered in a period of growth and prosperity for the town of Charlotte. Commerce, business, and industry took hold in the small rural town, boosting Charlotte's economy and providing job opportunities to the thousands of people who would make Charlotte their home. Determined to keep growth and development steady, Charlotte's town and business leaders sought additional railroad lines and encouraged new investments. Although the Civil War slowed momentum in the town as progress on unfinished railroad lines stopped and business and industry took on a war-time purpose, Charlotte continued to grow. After the war, amid the defeat and destruction of towns and cities throughout the South, Charlotte emerged relatively unscathed. The town had suffered little physical damage and business was able to pick up where it had left off before the start of the war. Charlotte's railroad lines, intact and functioning, significantly aided in the town's ability to resume business and commerce. Cotton was the key to Charlotte's future growth. With cotton prices high and the ability to transport the crop to industrial centers in the North, Charlotte emerged as an important marketing center in the years following the war. As Charlotte's railroad lines multiplied, its importance as a distribution center increased. New men, attracted to growing economic opportunities, came to town and quickly joined ranks with Charlotte's businessmen and town leaders, investing in new commercial ventures, industry, and manufacturing. Charlotte was a boom town and by 1881, investors finally succeeded in building the ultimate symbol of the New South, a cotton mill. The mill was quickly followed by others and by the end of the nineteenth century, Charlotte eight cotton mills and a growing number of related industrial concerns to support the textile industry.
