Contact: Logan McSwain For Immediate Release News Release The Charlotte Museum of History hosts Rites of Spring Saturday, May 5 CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Saturday, May 5 from 1 to 4 p.m the Museum hosts the Rites of Spring at the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite. Rites of Spring is an annual event celebrating the arrival of spring. The Hezekiah Alexander Homesite will come alive with Colonial storytelling, demonstrations and crafts. Children will have the opportunity to join in on springtime chores. “Rites of Spring is a great event to bring the entire family to the Alexander Homesite. Children and adults will enjoy the demonstrations,” said Regan Brooks, Tour and Volunteer Coordinator. “Tours of the Alexander Homesite are child-friendly. There are objects placed throughout the house that children are allowed to touch.”
Colonial demonstrations will include weaving, spinning, quill pen writing, woodworking and butter churning. Volunteer Museum docents will lead the demonstrations. Docents play many roles at the Museum including helping with programs such as Rites of Spring and giving tours of the Alexander Homesite.
The Hezekiah Alexander House, the oldest in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, dates back to 1774. The home is located on the grounds of the Museum and will be open to visitors throughout the event. Families are encouraged to bring a blanket and picnic lunch and spend the afternoon on the Homesite grounds.
Visit the Museum and Homesite during Rites of Spring to see the Museum’s docents bring the Homesite to life. No reservations required for the event. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, $3 for children ages 6-12 and children under 6 are free. Museum members get in free. The Charlotte Museum of History is Where History Has A Home. The Museum, with its core and visiting exhibitions, explores Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s rich history during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. The Museum is home to the oldest surviving structure in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, the Hezekiah Alexander House (circa 1774). Set on eight acres of park like grounds, the Museum is also home to the American Freedom Bell, the Backcountry Patriot Statue and historic gardens. In addition, the Museum offers: rental space for events and weddings, education programs for adults, schools and families, and membership benefits and opportunities. The Charlotte Museum of History is supported, in part, with a Basic Operating Grant form the Arts & Science Council. The Charlotte Museum of History is located at 3500 Shamrock Drive (between Eastway and Sharon Amity). Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Free every Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Open Mondays from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
