Lesson Focus:
Colonial Math Concepts

Objective:
For students to better understand the resources and goods important in Colonial society, as well as their measurement concepts and procedures.

Materials:

Instructions:

  1. You can use this activity to get the students ready for a tour at the Homesite, as the use of barrels and trade are concepts presented on the tour, or as a follow-up activity once you return and the students have seen these concepts in use at the Homesite.

  2. Give students a copy of the ‘Roll Out the Barrel’ worksheet for independent practice.

  3. Discuss the answers as a group and conclude the lesson using the following discussion points:
    - Why were barrels made by the copper so important to everyday colonial life?
    - Do we use the same measurement concepts today?
    - How do we transport goods today? What are the advantages of modern packaging?
