Mission
The members of the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite Docent Association help
support the mission of the Charlotte Museum of History.
The Hezekiah
Alexander Homesite, the oldest surviving house in Charlotte-Mecklenburg, is
open to the public for tours and programs throughout the year. The docent
association supports the educational program offerings of the museum.
Association members also support each other as lifelong learners by way of
sharing information, individual research, networking within the historic
community and peer education.
Docents
for the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite help support the museum in the following
ways:
-
Giving
tours of the Homesite dressed in Colonial costume
-
Leading
morning school tours
-
Providing
tours to the general public
daily at 1:15 p.m. and 3:15 p.m.
-
Staging
open-house tours during museum programs
-
Demonstrating colonial skills and life ways during special events
Training
Docents must participate in a training course where they will
receive in-depth education of the historical Homesite and the museum. This
volunteer position requires tour observations. After attending the training
course Docents observe several tours and give a practice tour under the
direction of the Education Department.
Time Commitment
Docents are asked to commit to a minimum of four hours each month, the
equivalent of two tours.
Age Requirements
Docents must be at least 17 years old. The museum has a Junior Docent Corps
for people between the ages of 12 and 16.
Junior Docents between the ages of 12 and 15 must be accompanied by
an adult while volunteering.
Clothing
In an effort to maintain historical accuracy, the museum will provide a
basic costume for every Docent. Docents are encouraged to expand their
costumes based upon research of the late 18th century.
Benefits
Ongoing educational opportunities and field trips are available to all
volunteers, as well as volunteer appreciation functions. Those that provide
more than 20 hours of service per year, receive free admission to many of
the museum’s programs, discounts in the museum gift shop and IRS tax
deductions.
Docents are
encouraged to develop an area of interest and share this knowledge
with fellow Docents and the public through programs and museum events. The
museum hosts informal monthly Lunch ’n Learn programs. These programs
provide docents with an opportunity to expand their knowledge on a variety
of historical topics.
