A visit to the Charlotte Museum of History brings history to life through artifacts, stories, lifestyles and biographies of Charlotteans past and present. Guided Tours Tours begin at 10 a.m. and are offered Tuesday-Friday. There are three types of guided tours available: Colonial Lifestyles: A tour of the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite This interactive and engaging tour of the colonial Homesite is led by experienced, knowledgeable, costumed docents. Each tour includes a visit to the fully furnished Hezekiah Alexander house, the oldest home in Mecklenburg County; the detached kitchen; and springhouse. The focus of the tour is the daily life of people in the North Carolina backcountry during the Colonial period. The tour provides a fascinating environment for students to explore the history of the region. A more in-depth hands-on experience is available at the request of the teacher; please refer to the “History Hands-on” option when making your reservation. Grades: K-12 Length: 2 hours for elementary students; 1.5 hours for secondary students Limit: 75 students
Connections to Today: The history of the Charlotte region Students become historians through gallery investigations and hands-on activities. All three core galleries will be visited, with an interactive opportunity for students in each gallery. The focus of the tour is identifying meaningful ways that events of the past have shaped the region we live in today. Students will expand their skills at identifying change over time through a session examining objects from the past three centuries. Grades: 3-12 Length: Approximately 1 hour Limit: 50 students
History’s Mysteries! Students become history detectives, learning to solve the mysteries of the past. The tour, based on the Solving the Rock House Mysteries exhibit, turns the Alexander House into a laboratory for historic research, illustrating the many ways to discover what happened in the past. This interactive session examines clues revealed by photographs, oral histories, and archaeological discoveries, and allows students to see how these clues were used to solve some of the Rock House mysteries during its restoration. The program includes a tour of the Alexander house and the exhibit, hands-on opportunities with artifacts and primary sources, as well as and a mystery for students to solve during their visit. Grades: 3-12 Length: 1.5 hours Limit: 50 students
Self-guided tours Museum self-guided tours may be arranged at your convenience during regular museum hours. Self-guided tours of the Alexander Homesite are not available. Teachers will be provided pre-visit materials that include a Gallery Trail for students to use during their visit and a post-visit assessment. While it is strongly recommended that teachers have a specific focus or activity for students during their visit, the gallery trail provided may be used in place of a teacher-designed activity. Grades: K-12 Length: 2 hour time limit Limit: 75 students Printer-Friendly Self-Guided Tour Packet
