Who are the
Hornet’s Nest Historians?
The
Hornet’s Nest Historians, a history club for middle and high school
homeschoolers, meet during the school year to attend workshops and receive
their complimentary copy of the Tar Heel Jr. Historian.
Members are eligible to attend Jr. Historian only workshops, receive
the magazine and are eligible to enter their History projects in a
state-wide competition next April. For information please call 704-568-1774.

Spring Feast Cooking Demonstration
March 11, 25 and April 8, 22, 10:00am – 12:00pm
For this spring’s Colonial Cooking programs, we’ll look into the larder and discover what early
Charlotteans had available to make for dinner at the end of a long winter. In the days before
supermarkets and freezers, settlers learned how to make the most out of foods that could be
preserved, dried and salt-cured to last until the next year’s spring crops. See an example of
open hearth cooking, and learn how backcountry cooks prepared meals without measuring
cups and cookbooks!
For ages 7-11. Reservations are required. This is a drop off event. (Limited to 7 per class)
Admission: $10 per child for non-members. $8 per child for CMH Household
members and above.

A must for aspiring young tailors and fashion design talents! Come see how cloth was made in Charlotte over two
Hundred years ago, and learn new skills through a variety of craft activities, from sewing and spinning, to fabric
Dying and a weaving demonstration.
For ages 7 and above. Reservations are required. This is a drop off event. (limited to 100)

Solving the Rock House Mysteries: Mec Dec Day
May 19, 10:00 am - 12:00pm
Tradition has it that our region’s civic leaders wrote a Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence a full year before the
Continental Congress’s 1776 Declaration of Independence. Hezekiah Alexander is said to have been one of the more
than two dozen signers of “Mec Dec.” Did it really exist? Investigate the stories surrounding this legendary document,
and learn how annual Mec Dec celebrations of years past became Charlotte’s biggest social event, attended by four US
Presidents!
For ages 7 and above. Reservations are required. This is a drop off event. (limited to 50)
Admission: $7 per child for non‑members; free children’s admission for CMH Household‑level & above members.
