The Lassiter Research Library, with its D.A.R. Reading Room, offers a comfortable environment where students, historians, and the public may research the history of the region and their own family history. Robert and Daisy Hanes Lassiter, after whom the library was named, donated this beautiful room from their family home which stood on 4th Street near Queens Road until the late 1970s. Their library with its oak paneled walls, built-in shelving and fireplace has been recreated at the museum.

The library’s holdings consist of approximately 1,000 volumes and a collection of local family histories and genealogies. The emphasis is on local and regional history, including books on the American Revolution and its effect on the Carolinas. In addition, there are books on decorative arts and artifacts and their care, as well as general books on American life in the colonial era. A number of periodicals are also available for reference use.

Please call 704-568-1774 if you are interested in using the library’s genealogy database, which contains records of family names from the Charlotte/Mecklenburg area with an emphasis on the Alexander family.

The Lassiter Research Library is open during normal business hours to anyone having paid admission to the museum. Please ask at the front desk to have the room unlocked. It is a reference library only; no books or other materials may be removed from the room. Photocopies are available upon request, subject to copyright laws.
