Master Plan

In 2007, the Board of Trustees and staff, with the help of the Lee Institute and White Oak Associates, began a self study as the first step in creating a master strategic plan for the Charlotte Museum of History. One of the first steps in this process was to seek out the views of our constituency. We heard from all of you - our long term supporters and members, our funders including the Arts and Science Council, other stakeholders in the community, as well as new "settlers" to this region, Charlotte's newcomers.

What did we find out?

  • That our greatest asset is Charlotte's oldest treasure, the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite.
  • That 239 years after Thomas Polk setlled here at the square and incorporated Charlottetowne, the Queen City is still a city in search of itself. We have the unique opportunity to give Charlotteans a sense of place by capturing and sharing the stories of this area for them.
  • That the museum should reflect Charlotte. If Charlotte is robust, energetic, and growing, so should be the museum. If Charlotte is welcoming and full of all sorts of opportunities, then so should be the museum. We need to grow in tune with a growing Charlotte so that we can connect the future to the roots of its past, and engage Charlotte's residents in building civic pride, character, and identity through these connections.

Clearly our constituents are calling for us to go deeper to take this museum to another level.

The images below represent our vision for the future of the museum. Our plans are divided into four phases that will build upon one another. Follow our progress as we implement these exciting goals.
