Tours

Take a step back in time with a guided or self-guided tour of the museum and Hezekiah Alexander Homesite.

Experience Charlotte’s past as a costumed docent takes you back to the eighteenth century. Guided tours of the homesite are available daily at 1:15pm and 3:15pm. Tours are limited to 20 people. Please register at the desk when you arrive at the museum, as tours are first come, first serve. Groups may call in advance to arrange for a personalized tour and schedule.

If you are unable to make a scheduled guided tour, self-guided tours are always available. Click here to familiarize yourself with the homesite and various other points of interest at the museum and grounds.

Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more by advance reservation. For more information contact Sheryl Jacoppo.

While you are at the museum and Homesite, experience Charlotte’s history with:

  • Three museum galleries tracing the history of Charlotte-Mecklenburg
  • The American Freedom Bell, the largest in the world at ground level
  • Historic gardens featuring herbs and native plants
  • Hands-on History Room with activities for kids of all ages
  • Museum Shop featuring arts and crafts, books and historical toys
  • A beautiful, park-like setting perfect for a picnic lunch

The Charlotte Museum of History is an easily accessible site that offers a covered entryway in the event of inclement weather.

In addition there are restrooms available on both the first and second floors of the museum.

Guide By Cell

Visitors to the grounds dial (704) 237-1998 at any time to access an audio tour developed by museum staff in collaboration with Guide by Cell. Special signs mark tour stops where visitors can listen to messages about the Hezekiah Alexander House, the barn, the kitchen, and the springhouse. The tour is free; the only cost to users is their cell phone minutes.

The audio tour supplements, but doesn’t replace, in-depth guided tours of the buildings. But, it will make information available to people who often can’t take a guided tour: early morning neighborhood walkers and families exploring in the long summer twilights, as well as would-be visitors who arrive on a day when the museum is closed.

People can even talk back to the tour by pressing 0# to leave a comment or suggestion for future improvement. The pilot tour has a limited number of stops, and will grow throughout 2009 based on visitor response and requests.  Come stroll our grounds soon and participate in this evolving program!
